A process can be technically impressive and still be a poor investment. That is why engineers increasingly need to understand the economic consequences of technical decisions. This webinar introduces some of the fundamental concepts used in engineering economics, including capital expenditure (CAPEX), operating expenditure (OPEX), cash flow, payback period, Net Present Value (NPV), and Internal Rate of Return (IRR).


Rather than approaching these concepts from a purely financial perspective, we will examine them through the lens of engineering projects and industrial decision-making. The webinar is designed as an accessible introduction for engineers and students who want to become more commercially aware and understand how technical projects are assessed beyond engineering performance alone. No advanced finance background is required.

Humzaa Imtiaz holds an MSc in Chemical & Biochemical Engineering from DTU, where his academic work included techno-economic analysis of biorefinery systems. His master's thesis investigated a zero-waste biorefinery concept using process modelling, techno-economic assessment, and environmental analysis, and he later contributed to research involving the economic assessment of biorefinery processes. Through ChemEnggLife, he teaches engineering economics with an emphasis on making financial concepts understandable and relevant to engineers.
